Celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Santiago de Compostela military airfield

Last Saturday, July 19, 2025, the 90th anniversary of the first military flights in Lavacolla (Galicia) took place at the Santiago Military Aerodrome. This event was attended by various military aircraft from the Air Force, the DGT, the National Police, and the Civil Guard.

During the event, an open house was held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., bringing the public closer to the Air Force.

The airfield’s main mission is currently to provide logistical and security support to military units that land there. Each summer, it hosts two Canadair CL-215T/415 units from the 43rd Wing for surveillance and firefighting.

The history of this airfield dates back to July 1935, when flights began with an air show, marking the beginning of the relationship between the Air Force and the civil society of Santiago. Following various vicissitudes, the airfield closed in 1983, becoming part of the León air sector. With the transfer of the civil facilities to the new airport operator, AENA, in 1993, the detachment was deactivated, and the Santiago Military Aerodrome was formally established and officially established.

With the creation of the military telecommunications maintenance center in Galicia (CEMAN 83), the facilities were modernized and became part of the General Air Command.

Since July 1995, the airfield has been classified as a joint military and civil use facility.

The aircraft participating in the 90th anniversary were those shown in the gallery.
