The General Dynamics X-62A, known as VISTA (Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft), is one of the most modern test benches available today. It is designed for the development and testing of real-time flight capabilities using artificial intelligence and machine learning. This technological leap represents a turning point in the world of aviation.
It reopens debates about whether or not it’s ethical to let AI make decisions like dropping bombs on populated targets. It raises unexplored challenges, such as the situation that would lead to a reduction in the use of human military pilots. But the truth is, it’s already here, and the possibilities generated by piloting fighter jets with artificial intelligence are countless.
The first advantage is the possibility of surpassing the capabilities of human piloting. A clear example in favor of this new technology would be the ability to perform maneuvers with Gs greater than the human body could withstand.
For now, we can speak of the resounding success of the initial tests carried out, thanks to close collaboration with the Air Combat Evolution program by the Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The General Dynamics X-62 VISTA is an experimental aircraft, derived from the F-16D Fighting Falcon, that was jointly modified by General Dynamics and Calspan for use by the United States Air Force (USAF). Originally designated NF-16D, the aircraft was redesignated X-62A in June 2021 as part of an upgrade to a Skyborg, featuring a Simulation Autonomous Control System (SACS).

A milestone in history, the day the first “dogfight” took place between the X62A VISTA controlled by AI systems and an F16 piloted by an experienced fighter pilot. The first exercise initially involved only defensive maneuvers between the two, after which they moved on to nose-to-nose offensive engagements, reaching milestones. over 2,000 feet in altitude and speeds exceeding 1.7 match. No official source offered data on the simulated combat, however, various specialized press outlets have reported that the AI at the controls of the fighter far outperformed its real-life opponent in each and every maneuver.
