Ff72, project for the conversion of atr turbopropellers into amphibious firefighting aircraft

With the help of Positive Aviation, as long as the program schedule is not delayed, a new alternative to the current fire-fighting scoopers will enter operation in 2028. This new amphibious aircraft, called the FF72, consists of the conversion of used ATR-72 turboprops into amphibious versions. The FF72 (FF Fire Fighting) leverages proven technologies and combines the expertise of the aeronautical and naval industries.
From initial development to operational status, Positive Aviation ensures its commitment and technical support will last throughout the FF72’s lifecycle, ensuring its long-term success.

Positive Aviation, based at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, is currently assembling the first FF72-X1 demonstrator aircraft in its H16 hangar, with its first flight scheduled for 2026.
The French company is supported by Brigder Aerospace, one of the largest and leading companies in the firefighting sector. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding under which Bridge Aerospace will become the North American launch customer for the new amphibious aircraft. The framework agreement includes the acquisition of ten units, which will complement Bridger Aerospace’s fleet, which is composed primarily of CL-415 EAF Super Scoopers.

The addition of the FF72 will integrate disruptive new technology, further enhancing Bridger’s ability to respond to wildfires with cutting-edge, cost-effective aerial firefighting capabilities. With the addition of the FF72 to its fleet, Bridger aims to consolidate its position as a leader in the aerial firefighting sector, continually innovating and expanding its capabilities to meet the evolving needs of wildfire management.

“Bridger is a leading aerial firefighting company in North America and has long been recognized for its expertise in deploying, training, and providing aerial firefighting services to communities impacted by wildfires,” said Laurent Schmitt, President and Founder of PA. “We are proud to partner with Bridger and are excited to develop this aircraft to meet the growing demand for cost-effective wildfirefighting solutions both in the U.S. and around the world.”

Sam Davis, CEO of Bridger, said during the signing of the bilateral agreement: “With the growing global demand for aerial firefighting assets and the current shortage of available assets, the FF72 will be a valuable addition to our Scooper fleet. By combining advanced airframe enhancements with proven aircraft technologies and reliability, Positive Aviation has developed an exceptional product. We look forward to working together to introduce these assets and support the wildfire fighting community in addressing the ongoing, and increasingly year-round, challenge of wildfires.”
