Columbia Helicopters, the world’s leading heavy-lift helicopter operator, announced in February of this year a new development program to redefine commercial Chinook operations worldwide. As the OEM of the commercial Chinook, the Model 234, Columbia plans to create a new super-heavy-lift aircraft model by converting existing CH-47D Chinooks.
This program, called the 234 Special Purpose (234SP), leverages the design foundation of the 234 model while retaining the CH-47D’s proven performance for decades. It represents an alternative for Latin American and African countries desperately needing to replace Russian-made aircraft with limited spare parts supplies amid the war in Ukraine. Along with the planned Chinook Integrated Sustainment Program (CISP), these programs are intended to enhance opportunities and support for commercial Chinook operators by providing a fully FAA-certified transport-class helicopter that provides affordability, availability, and on-demand capabilities. “Our introduction of the 234SP to the market marks a new chapter in commercial Chinook operations,” said Mike Tremlett, President and CEO of Columbia Helicopters.
