An A400M from the 31st Wing takes off from Zaragoza Air Base en route to the Baltic Air Policing mission.

An A400M from Wing 31 took off this morning for Šiauliai, Lithuania, to join the Vilkas detachment, which is beginning its 69th rotation as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing operation.

This strategic transport aircraft, a symbol of the 31st Wing’s operational capability, thus assumes the task of performing in-flight refueling operations, a key function in supporting the activity of allied aircraft deployed in the Baltic region. With this, Spain reinforces its commitment to collective defense and stability in a region considered a priority for European security.

The Baltic Air Policing operation constitutes one of Spain’s most solid commitments to the Atlantic Alliance. The A400M’s in-flight refueling capability significantly expands the range and flexibility of operations, making the unit an essential asset to the success of the Vilkas detachment.

Each rotation not only strengthens the security of Baltic airspace but also projects the image of a modern, cohesive Armed Forces fully integrated into international missions.

The contingent’s farewell ceremony was attended by the commander of the Zaragoza air base, General Pascual Soria Martínez, accompanied by the commander of the 31st Wing, Colonel Francisco Vela García. Both offered words of encouragement and recognition to the crews, emphasizing the unit’s pride and the trust placed in their work.
